Japanese stocks of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) such as Japan Post Bank <7182>, Disco <6146>, Advantest <6857>, Renesas <6723>, Hitachi <6501>, Shin-Etsu Chemical <4063>, Murata Manufacturing <6981> etc fell in comparison to the Tokyo Stock Exchange (at a rate of 1 dollar to 142.21 yen), causing almost across-the-board declines. The Chicago Nikkei 225 futures settlement price was 2,400 yen lower at 37,450 yen compared to Osaka's daytime trading.
The U.S. stock market saw mixed results. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 42,313.00, up 137.89 points, while the Nasdaq ended trading at 18,119.59, down 70.70 points. The inflation slowdown trend was confirmed with the August PCE Price Index, leading to an initial rise in stock prices. Observations of a significant interest rate cut due to a slower pace of inflation than expected supported the market, resulting in further gains. The University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index exceeded expectations, pushing the Dow higher. Despite concerns over escalating tensions in the Middle East causing a slowdown towards the end of trading, record high levels were achieved. The Nasdaq was impacted by the decline of Nvidia (NVDA) in the semiconductor industry, leading to overall mixed results.
In the New York foreign exchange market on the 27th, the Dollar-Yen exchange rate fell from 143.21 to 142.07, closing at 142.15 due to expectations of a Fed's additional 0.5% interest rate cut following the slower than expected inflation in August, resulting in a prevalent selling of dollars amid declining long-term interest rates. The dollar's decline stopped after the final confirmation of the University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index in September surpassing expectations. Continued buying of yen was seen following views of a hawkish stance by new Liberal Democratic Party leader in monetary policy. The Euro-Dollar rate rose to 1.1203 dollars before falling back to 1.1146 dollars, closing at 1.1164 dollars. The Euro faced selling pressure due to expectations of an additional rate cut by the European Central Bank by the end of the year.
On the 27th, NY crude oil futures for November showed strength (NYMEX crude oil November futures closing price: 68.18, up 0.51).
