Brother Industries, Ltd.

Brother Industries Co., Ltd. (President: Kazufumi Ikeda)'s production base, Brother Industries (U.K.) (hereinafter referred to as BIUK), has started reusing used ink cartridges for printers and multifunction devices this month. This initiative follows Brother Group's 20-year effort to recycle toner cartridges, and will now handle the collection and re-shipment of used ink cartridges in-house, contributing to further waste reduction towards achieving a sustainable society.

Brother Group has been promoting initiatives to reuse and recycle products and consumables that customers have finished using. As part of this effort, used toner cartridges from laser printers and multifunction machines are collected, recycled into toner cartridges of the same quality as new ones, and delivered back to customers. The initiative started in the United Kingdom (BIUK) in 2004, and has since expanded to factories in Slovakia, the USA, and Japan. By the end of March 2024, the group had recycled over 40 million toner cartridges.

BIUK has started an initiative to recycle ink cartridges used in inkjet printers and multifunction machines, leveraging the technology and expertise developed in toner cartridge recycling. Used ink cartridges from various locations in Europe are collected, recycled into ink cartridges of the same quality as new ones, and shipped out.

Information on the background and objectives of ink cartridge recycling is detailed on Brother's SDGs Special Site 'Brother SDGs STORY'. Interviews with stakeholders and videos showcasing the recycling process are also available.

Brother Group's environmental goal 'Brother Group Environmental Vision 2050' aims to maximize resource circulation by 2050, focusing on sustainable resource utilization and minimizing environmental impact from waste. Furthermore, in the midterm strategy 'CS B2024', resource circulation is identified as one of the materiality (important social issues). The aim is to reduce the new resource input rate for products to 81% or less by 2024 and promote initiatives such as product reuse and recycling. By advancing the recycling of ink cartridges in addition to toner cartridges, further waste reduction will be achieved.

Going forward, Brother Group will continue to strengthen environmentally conscious initiatives in line with the Brother Group Vision 'At your side 2030'. This vision aims to contribute to the development of society and the future of the planet by enhancing initiatives that are considerate of the earth's environment.
