ADAMA Ltd. (SZSE:000553) Stock Catapults 29% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 1 07:03

ADAMA Ltd. (SZSE:000553) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 28% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, ADAMA may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, since almost half of all companies in the Chemicals industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 2x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has ADAMA Performed Recently?

ADAMA hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think ADAMA's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For ADAMA?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, ADAMA would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 15%. At least revenue has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 1.7% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 23% growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's understandable that ADAMA's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On ADAMA's P/S

Despite ADAMA's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that ADAMA maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.

You always need to take note of risks, for example - ADAMA has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
