Wangfujing Group Co., Ltd.'s (SHSE:600859) P/E Is Still On The Mark Following 28% Share Price Bounce

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 1 08:26

Despite an already strong run, Wangfujing Group Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600859) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 28% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 19% over that time.

Since its price has surged higher, Wangfujing Group's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 37.9x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 29x and even P/E's below 18x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Wangfujing Group has been doing quite well of late. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors' willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Wangfujing Group's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Wangfujing Group's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 46%. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 45% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 26% per annum over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 19% each year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Wangfujing Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Wangfujing Group's P/E

Wangfujing Group's P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Wangfujing Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

It is also worth noting that we have found 2 warning signs for Wangfujing Group (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you need to take into consideration.
