Background of the initiative - the issue of increasing emissions of used disposable diapers
Big
Affected by the declining birthrate and aging population, emissions of used disposable diapers (for children and adults) are expected to increase significantly from 2.08 million in 2015 to 2.45 million in 2030, and it is estimated that it will reach about 7% of total general waste. (※)
In 2020, the Ministry of the Environment formulated “guidelines on the amount of recycled disposable diapers, etc.” Also, most of the used disposable diapers that are currently discarded are incinerated at waste disposal facilities such as municipalities, etc., but they have announced a goal of increasing the number of municipalities working to recycle used disposable diapers to 100 municipalities by 2030, which is about 3 times the current level. This social issue has become a very important issue that should be addressed not only by local governments but also by businesses related to disposable diapers.

What is the horizontal recycling project ReFF (Leaf)
Big
ReFF (Leaf) is an acronym for “Recycle for the Future,” and is the horizontal recycling brand name developed by Unicharm. We are working on recycling to “not throw away used paper pants” in order to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society. Oji Nepia, who had previously been studying measures to address the issue of increased emissions of used paper underpants and disposable diapers, agreed with this idea and participated in this project.

We have recently decided to participate in the ReFF (Leaf) project with the cooperation of Unicharm Co., Ltd. We hope that recycling efforts through toilet rolls that everyone uses in everyday life will help raise awareness about environmental issues. Going forward, we will continue to be deeply aware of our corporate responsibilities in response to environmental issues such as forest conservation, and will contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
