Strong Week for AVIC Industry-Finance Holdings (SHSE:600705) Shareholders Doesn't Alleviate Pain of Five-year Loss

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 2 16:28

It is doubtless a positive to see that the AVIC Industry-Finance Holdings Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600705) share price has gained some 68% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. After all, the share price is down 21% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.

While the last five years has been tough for AVIC Industry-Finance Holdings shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over five years AVIC Industry-Finance Holdings' earnings per share dropped significantly, falling to a loss, with the share price also lower. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earnings. At present it's hard to make valid comparisons between EPS and the share price. But we would generally expect a lower price, given the situation.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, AVIC Industry-Finance Holdings' TSR for the last 5 years was -11%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that AVIC Industry-Finance Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 6.2% over one year. That's including the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 2% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
