There's No Escaping Jingjin Equipment Inc.'s (SHSE:603279) Muted Earnings

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 4, 2024 14:36

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 12x Jingjin Equipment Inc. (SHSE:603279) may be sending very bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in China have P/E ratios greater than 34x and even P/E's higher than 64x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Jingjin Equipment has been doing quite well of late. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company's earnings are going to fall away like everyone else's soon. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For Jingjin Equipment?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Jingjin Equipment's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's bottom line as the year before. However, a few strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 58% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 8.8% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 19% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Jingjin Equipment's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What We Can Learn From Jingjin Equipment's P/E?

It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Jingjin Equipment's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
