Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Sansure Biotech Inc.'s (SHSE:688289) Low P/E

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 6 22:31

When close to half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 34x, you may consider Sansure Biotech Inc. (SHSE:688289) as an attractive investment with its 28.5x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for Sansure Biotech as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. If not, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Sansure Biotech's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Sansure Biotech's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 53%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 83% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 11% per year as estimated by the one analyst watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 19% growth each year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.

With this information, we can see why Sansure Biotech is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Sansure Biotech's P/E?

While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Sansure Biotech's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Sansure Biotech (of which 1 is a bit concerning!) you should know about.
