Nine companies handling chilled food products (Itoham Kikkoman Holdings, Nissin Foods Chilled, Nissin York, Nippon Ham, Prima Ham, Marudai Food, Meiji, Morinaga Dairy Industry, Snow Brand Megmilk) have established the "Chilled Logistics Research Council" on October 7, 2024 (Monday) to achieve sustainable chilled food logistics.

Background of the establishment
Currently, the logistics environment surrounding chilled food is at a major turning point. With concerns about the "2024 logistics problem" where goods may not be transportable due to driver shortages and decreased transport capacity, the logistics of chilled food faces unique challenges such as short shelf life and the need for refrigerated storage, making it difficult to handle compared to room temperature logistics.
While manufacturer companies have addressed logistics challenges individually or in some industries in the past, it has not led to a fundamental solution. Therefore, nine companies handling chilled food have come together to establish the "Chilled Logistics Research Group" to discuss and consider the future direction of chilled food logistics.

* Products distributed in temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius or below, such as processed meat products like ham and sausages, dairy products like milk and cheese, fresh noodles, pizzas, etc.

Vision (Goals)
"Chilled Logistics Research Group" will unite stakeholders involved in chilled food (manufacturers, distributors, and logistics companies) to discuss the approach to chilled food logistics. The aim is to achieve sustainable chilled food logistics that can supply products stably to consumers while resolving issues and reducing environmental impact.
Challenges and Initiatives
To continue supplying chilled food to consumers steadily, it is necessary for consignor companies including shippers and consignees to review delivery conditions and commercial practices that have been taken for granted so far, and to create an environment where drivers can work comfortably. Therefore, aiming for the ideal state of chilled food logistics, we will work on the following four challenges.

1. Relaxation of delivery conditions
Extending delivery lead times, relaxing delivery time slots, store-specific sorting operations, 365-day delivery, reevaluation of order units, advance ordering of new products and specials, extension of delivery deadlines (delivery limit dates), etc.

2. Reduction of additional tasks for truck drivers
Driver-specific sorting tasks, rearrangement tasks within warehouses, warehouse movement tasks, reevaluation of forklift operations, etc.

3. Optimization of transportation efficiency
Promotion of joint delivery, etc.

Efficiency improvement through standardization and system implementation.
Promotion of pallet operation, etc.

*Depending on the future changes in the logistics environment, additional or modified initiatives will be implemented.
Division between industry associations and individual companies.
