Japanese ADRs, such as Japan Post Bank <7182>, Murata Manufacturing <6981>, Sony <6758>, Marubeni <8002>, MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings <8725>, Mitsubishi Corp <8058>, Denso <6902>, etc., fell in comparison to the Tokyo Stock Exchange (at an exchange rate of 1 dollar to 148.15 yen), with general selling pressure. The Chicago Nikkei 225 futures settled at 38,915 yen, down 455 yen from Osaka's daytime trading.
The U.S. stock market declined. The Dow Jones fell by 398.51 points to 41,954.24 points, while the Nasdaq ended trading down 213.95 points at 17,923.90. Concerns heightened over the escalation of attacks by Hamas, as Israel's Prime Minister marked the first year of the attacks and declared their continuation. This led to increased caution in the Middle East situation and a decline in the market after the opening. The Nasdaq also faced selling pressure due to rising long-term interest rates, resulting in a sluggish market throughout the day. Concerns grew over a newly intensified hurricane, which could lead to economic disruptions, causing a further decline towards the end of trading.
In the New York foreign exchange market on the 7th, the dollar-yen rate fluctuated slightly from 148.27 yen to 147.86 yen before closing at 148.17 yen. Amid rising geopolitical risks, there was a prevalent tendency for yen buying as investors sought risk aversion. Additionally, profit-taking dollar selling ahead of the release of important inflation indicators in the U.S. and caution towards the potential economic impact of the expanding hurricane led to a predominance of dollar selling. The euro-dollar rose to 1.0987 before falling to 1.0970 and closing at 1.0972. Selling pressure on the euro eased following hawkish comments from Holzmann, the President of the Austrian Central Bank, indicating that inflation control was still far off. However, concerns over the decline in manufacturing orders in Germany limited upside for euro selling.
NY crude oil futures for November continued to rise significantly (NYMEX crude oil November futures closing price: 77.14, up 2.76).
