Insiders who purchased Ameresco, Inc. (NYSE:AMRC) shares in the past 12 months are unlikely to be deeply impacted by the stock's 10% decline over the past week. After taking the recent loss into consideration, the US$2.21m worth of stock they bought is now worth US$3.02m, indicating that their investment yielded a positive return.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Ameresco Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Founder George Sakellaris made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$903k worth of shares at a price of US$22.66 each. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$33.54. Because it occurred at a lower valuation, it doesn't tell us much about whether insiders might find today's price attractive.

In the last twelve months Ameresco insiders were buying shares, but not selling. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Insider Ownership Of Ameresco

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Ameresco insiders own about US$708m worth of shares (which is 39% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Ameresco Insiders?

The fact that there have been no Ameresco insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. But insiders have shown more of an appetite for the stock, over the last year. It would be great to see more insider buying, but overall it seems like Ameresco insiders are reasonably well aligned (owning significant chunk of the company's shares) and optimistic for the future. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
