S&P 500 and Dow Jones Hit Record Highs to Kick Off Major Earnings Week

The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average reached new intraday highs on Monday, as investors kicked off the first major earnings week of the season. $NVIDIA (NVDA.US)$ closed out the session at an all-time high, up 2.43% to $138.07.

The $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ was trading 0.77% higher at 5,859.95 just past 4 PM ET after earlier touching a 5,871.41 all-time intraday high. The $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$ likewise gained 0.47% to 43,065.22, having earlier reached a record 43,139.00 -- the index's first trip ever above 43,000. Meanwhile, the $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ added 0.87% to 18,502.69, but remained slightly below the 18,671.07 record that it hit in July.

Stocks rose as investors awaited major earnings reports Thursday from $Netflix (NFLX.US)$, $ASML Holding (ASML.US)$, and semiconductor giant $Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM.US)$.

Major banks like $Bank of America (BAC.US)$, $Citigroup (C.US)$, $Goldman Sachs (GS.US)$ likewise plan to release results on Tuesday. So do pharma giants $UnitedHealth (UNH.US)$ and $Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.CA)$:
