We're Not Worried About Archosaur Games' (HKG:9990) Cash Burn

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 14 19:53

Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.

So should Archosaur Games (HKG:9990) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

Does Archosaur Games Have A Long Cash Runway?

You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. As at June 2024, Archosaur Games had cash of CN¥1.8b and no debt. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through CN¥5.3m. That means it had a cash runway of very many years as of June 2024. While this is only one measure of its cash burn situation, it certainly gives us the impression that holders have nothing to worry about. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.

How Well Is Archosaur Games Growing?

Given our focus on Archosaur Games' cash burn, we're delighted to see that it reduced its cash burn by a nifty 99%. And revenue is up 44% in that same period; also a good sign. Overall, we'd say its growth is rather impressive. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

Can Archosaur Games Raise More Cash Easily?

While Archosaur Games seems to be in a decent position, we reckon it is still worth thinking about how easily it could raise more cash, if that proved desirable. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

Archosaur Games has a market capitalisation of CN¥1.3b and burnt through CN¥5.3m last year, which is 0.4% of the company's market value. So it could almost certainly just borrow a little to fund another year's growth, or else easily raise the cash by issuing a few shares.

How Risky Is Archosaur Games' Cash Burn Situation?

As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Archosaur Games' cash burn. In particular, we think its cash burn reduction stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. And even its revenue growth was very encouraging. Taking all the factors in this report into account, we're not at all worried about its cash burn, as the business appears well capitalized to spend as needs be.
