It's been a soft week for Shenzhen Energy Group Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000027) shares, which are down 14%. On the bright side the returns have been quite good over the last half decade. After all, the share price is up a market-beating 28% in that time.

Although Shenzhen Energy Group has shed CN¥5.3b from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Shenzhen Energy Group's earnings per share are down 0.2% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

So it's hard to argue that the earnings per share are the best metric to judge the company, as it may not be optimized for profits at this point. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

In contrast revenue growth of 18% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Shenzhen Energy Group is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Shenzhen Energy Group's TSR for the last 5 years was 42%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Shenzhen Energy Group has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 5.8% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. However, that falls short of the 7% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
