On this occasion, Tokyo Port Bureau, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, Uniecs Co., Ltd., Mitsui E&S Co., Ltd., and Iwatani Corporation, based on the agreement (Note 1) concluded on May 30, 2023, started handling operations using a hydrogen fuel cell generator (referred to as 'FC' below) implemented on a tire-type gate crane (referred to as 'RTG' below) at the Oi Container Terminal today, marking the start of cargo handling operations with an RTG powered by hydrogen for the first time in Japan. By widely expanding the results of this project, we aim to promote the widespread use of hydrogen in cargo handling machinery and accelerate decarbonization of Tokyo Port. (As of October 21, 2024, according to Mitsui E&S Co., Ltd.)

1. Implementation Details

(1) Retrofitting diesel generators of cargo handling machinery with FC power generation units.
At the Oi Container Terminal, we will verify whether equivalent cargo handling capacity can be achieved by converting the diesel engine generators of the operating RTGs to FC power generation units, which do not emit CO2 during power generation and use hydrogen as fuel.

(2) Establishment of a hydrogen supply system for cargo handling machinery.
Hydrogen is transported from a hydrogen production plant in Chiba Prefecture to the Oi Container Terminal using trailers. The hydrogen is pressurized using a hydrogen supply unit installed within the terminal and then filled into the hydrogen tank inside the RTG.

(3) Implementation of cargo handling operations by cargo handling machinery (including hydrogen refueling for cargo handling machinery).
We will carry out cargo handling operations using RTGs equipped with FC power generation units, conduct data collection and analysis, and verify issues and countermeasures in terminal operations.

Note 1) FC Conversion Project of Cargo Handling Machinery at Tokyo Port
Press Release dated May 30, Reiwa 5: Implementation of FC Conversion Project for Cargo Handling Machinery at Tokyo Port
Note 2) Rubber Tired Gantry crane (RTG: Rubber Tired Gantry crane)
It is a crane that can travel without rails on the ground by providing legs with tires at both ends.
Note 3) Fuel Cell (FC: Fuel Cell)
A device that generates electricity by chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen.
