YTL PowerSeraya Breaks Ground for 600MW Hydrogen-Ready Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT), Paving the Way for Singapore's Net Zero Future

YTL Power International ·  Oct 23 00:00

● The 600MW hydrogen-ready CCGT is estimated to cost S$800 million and targeted for completion by 31 December 2027, marking a major milestone in Singapore's transition to sustainable energy.
● YTL PowerSeraya has appointed GE Vernova and SEPCOIII as consortium partners to develop the 600MW hydrogen-ready CCGT at its Pulau Seraya Power Station site, reinforcing its commitment to Singapore's long-term energy security and aligning with the nation's net zero carbon emissions aspiration.
● This project marks GE Vernova's first hydrogen-ready CCGT in Singapore, utilising its advanced 9 High Efficiency Air Cooled (9HA.01) gas turbines, which are among the most efficient globally in energy generation.
● Upon completion, the CCGT will be 50 per cent hydrogen capable, and has the potential of future retrofitting to 100 per cent readiness, with the capacity to power around 864,000 four-room HDB flats.

Singapore, 23 October 2024 – YTL PowerSeraya Pte. Limited ("YTL PowerSeraya"), a wholly owned subsidiary of YTL Power International Berhad ("YTL Power International"), has officially commenced the development of a 600MW hydrogen-ready Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) at its Pulau Seraya Power Station (PSPS) site. This project, estimated to cost S$800 million, is targeted for completion by 31 December 2027 and stands as a significant milestone in Singapore's transition to sustainable energy.

In conjunction with Singapore International Energy Week, an industry-exclusive groundbreaking ceremony was held on 23 October 2024 at the PSPS site, with 100 professionals and partners in attendance. Graced by Guest-of-Honour Dr Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, the ceremony marked the official appointment of GE Vernova and SEPCOIII as consortium partners for the 600MW hydrogen-ready CCGT.

"YTL PowerSeraya's commitment to advancing the Singapore energy landscape is reflected in our investment in cutting-edge technology for our 600MW hydrogen-ready CCGT. This initiative is not just a step towards cleaner energy but a catalyst for a resilient and sustainable energy ecosystem in Singapore, reflecting our long-term commitment to the nation's energy stability. As we continue our journey towards achieving net zero, YTL PowerSeraya will continue to remain at the forefront of innovation, driving solutions that support both energy security and environmental stewardship," said Mr John Ng, Group CEO at YTL PowerSeraya.

Official Appointment of Consortium Partners
The project marks GE Vernova's first hydrogen-ready CCGT in Singapore, featuring its advanced 9 High Efficiency Air Cooled (9HA.01) gas turbines, which are globally recognised for their
superior efficiency in energy generation. With their enhanced energy efficiency, the 9HA.01 gas turbines will help reduce carbon emissions, supporting Singapore's transition towards cleaner, low-emission power generation.

Appointed by YTL PowerSeraya, GE Vernova and SEPCOIII will commence the development of the cutting-edge hydrogen-ready power generation technology following the successful award of
the first Request for Proposal (RFP) under EMA's new Centralised Process framework earlier this year. This partnership highlights the collective efforts of the parties to work towards a net zero future and position Singapore at the forefront of sustainable energy developments.

"Our strategic partnership with YTL PowerSeraya underscores our combined expertise in hydrogen and gas turbine technologies. With over 50 years of experience and more than 120 gas
turbines globally utilising hydrogen and associated fuels, GE Vernova is proud to collaborate with YTL PowerSeraya, who has a strong track record of pioneering innovative power solutions in the region. Together, we are committed to advancing Singapore's energy future with this 600MW hydrogen-ready CCGT project," shared Ramesh Singaram, President and CEO, Asia, Gas
Power, GE Vernova.

Additionally, designed to be 50 per cent hydrogen capable upon completion, YTL PowerSeraya's hydrogen-ready CCGT can be retrofitted to achieve 100 per cent hydrogen readiness in the future.
Upon completion, it will have the capacity to power approximately 864,000 four-room HDB flats, contributing significantly to Singapore's greener energy future.

Powering Singapore's Green Future with Sustainable Technology
The hydrogen-ready CCGT project highlights YTL PowerSeraya's commitment to strengthening Singapore's energy resilience and sustainability, which aligns with global initiatives to promote energy efficiency and clean energy solutions. In line with Singapore's National Hydrogen Strategy, which anticipates low-carbon hydrogen meeting up to 50 per cent of the country's electricity demand by 2050, the CCGT will further diversify Singapore's power mix, complementing solar, imported electricity, and other low-carbon energy sources.

Mr Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of EMA, said, "YTL PowerSeraya has consistently played a key role in delivering advanced energy solutions that contribute to a sustainable future. The 600MW hydrogen-ready CCGT will add essential capacity to meet Singapore's growing electricity needs. Under the Centralised Process framework, this lower-carbon, hydrogen-ready solution will be an important element in building a cleaner and more resilient power system for the nation."

Dato' Seri Yeoh Seok Hong, Managing Director of YTL Power International, commented, "The 600MW hydrogen-ready CCGT project is a testament to YTL Power's unwavering commitment to Singapore's energy landscape. Our long-term vision is to invest in low-carbon technologies and energy solutions that support a sustainable and resilient future. We are committed to playing a vital role in Singapore's path to net zero, while also enhancing energy security both locally and across the region for years to come."

With over 53 years of experience in the power generation industry, this project highlights YTL PowerSeraya's dedication to building a low-carbon future, and its continuing efforts to innovate to achieve the global sustainability goals while supporting Singapore in achieving its net zero target by 2050.
