Letong ChemicalLTD (SZSE:002319) Shareholders Are up 21% This Past Week, but Still in the Red Over the Last Year

Letong ChemicalLTD(SZSE:002319)の株主は先週21%増加しましたが、過去1年間はまだ赤字です

This month, we saw the Letong Chemical Co.,LTD (SZSE:002319) up an impressive 32%. But that is minimal compensation for the share price under-performance over the last year. The cold reality is that the stock has dropped 30% in one year, under-performing the market.

On a more encouraging note the company has added CN¥376m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the one-year loss for shareholders.

Because Letong ChemicalLTD made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

In the last twelve months, Letong ChemicalLTD increased its revenue by 4.7%. While that may seem decent it isn't great considering the company is still making a loss. Given this fairly low revenue growth (and lack of profits), it's not particularly surprising to see the stock down 30% in a year. It's important not to lose sight of the fact that profitless companies must grow. But if you buy a loss making company then you could become a loss making investor.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 9.3% in the last year, Letong ChemicalLTD shareholders lost 30%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 4%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering.
