ESR Group (HKG:1821 Shareholders Incur Further Losses as Stock Declines 9.8% This Week, Taking Three-year Losses to 55%

If you love investing in stocks you're bound to buy some losers. Long term ESR Group Limited (HKG:1821) shareholders know that all too well, since the share price is down considerably over three years. Unfortunately, they have held through a 57% decline in the share price in that time. Unfortunately the share price momentum is still quite negative, with prices down 10% in thirty days.

With the stock having lost 9.8% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over the three years that the share price declined, ESR Group's earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. Since the company has fallen to a loss making position, it's hard to compare the change in EPS with the share price change. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

A Different Perspective

ESR Group provided a TSR of 4.8% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 6% per year, over five years. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
