Soyea Technology Co., Ltd's (SZSE:000909) Shares Climb 29% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 28 18:22

The Soyea Technology Co., Ltd (SZSE:000909) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 29%. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 16% over that time.

After such a large jump in price, when almost half of the companies in China's Real Estate industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.1x, you may consider Soyea Technology as a stock not worth researching with its 6.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Has Soyea Technology Performed Recently?

For example, consider that Soyea Technology's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. One possibility is that the P/S is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Soyea Technology, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is Soyea Technology's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Soyea Technology's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 49% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 82% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 10% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Soyea Technology's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

What Does Soyea Technology's P/S Mean For Investors?

The strong share price surge has lead to Soyea Technology's P/S soaring as well. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Soyea Technology currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. With a revenue decline on investors' minds, the likelihood of a souring sentiment is quite high which could send the P/S back in line with what we'd expect. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
