ADR (American Depositary Receipt) Japanese stocks such as Japan Post <6178>, SMC <6273>, Mizuho Financial Group <8411>, Mitsubishi Corporation <8058>, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group <8306>, SoftBank Group <9984>, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group <8316>, etc. rose compared to the Tokyo Stock Exchange (1 dollar equivalent to 153.24 yen), generally somewhat leaning towards buying. Chicago Nikkei 225 futures settlement price closed at 38,605 yen, down 65 yen from Osaka daytime trading.
The U.S. stock market rose. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 42,387.57, up 273.17 points, while the Nasdaq closed at 18,567.19, up 48.58 points. Limited retaliatory attacks by Israel against Iran eased concerns about escalating tensions in the Middle East, leading to an increase in trading post-opening. Following expectations of strong earnings reports from major tech companies scheduled for this week, buying continued to rise. The Nasdaq, wary of rising long-term interest rates towards the end, faltered, but the market remained strong throughout the day and closed.
On the 28th in the New York foreign exchange market, the dollar-yen pair initially declined to 152.41 yen, then rose to 153.37 yen before closing at 153.25 yen. With the drop in crude oil prices, the decline in interest rates led to a predominance of selling dollars. Subsequently, the unexpected improvement in the U.S. October Dallas Fed manufacturing activity index, along with lackluster results from the U.S. 2-year and 5-year bond auctions, caused bond yields to rise, prompting a resurgence in dollar purchases. Following the results of the lower house election, speculation about a December additional rate hike by the Bank of Japan receded, further fueling yen selling. The Euro-dollar pair rose to 1.0828 dollars, then fell to 1.0810 dollars before closing at 1.0816 dollars.
NY crude oil futures for December plummeted (NYMEX crude oil December futures closing price: 67.38, down 4.40).
