The decline of heavy equipment maker Caterpillar (CAT) weighed down the Dow, leading to mixed trading after the opening. The private sector employment statistics exceeded expectations, and the domestic gross domestic product (GDP) for the July-September quarter showed a slowdown in growth from the previous quarter but still demonstrated robust growth, boosting market expectations for a soft landing. However, concerns about rising long-term interest rates, weakness in the semiconductor sector, and profit-taking suppressed the upside, causing the market to falter and end the session in decline. By sector, media & entertainment, durable consumer goods & apparel rose, while semiconductors & semiconductor equipment, technology hardware & equipment declined.

Alphabet (GOOG), which operates Google search, benefited from artificial intelligence (AI) investments, with strong performances in the cloud and search divisions, leading to favorable earnings and continued buying interest. Shake Shack (SHAK), which operates a hamburger shop chain, saw its adjusted earnings per share exceed expectations in the third quarter, leading to an increase. Snap (SNAP), the photo and video sharing app, exceeded growth expectations in user numbers in the third quarter. Additionally, the success of advertising business reform led to revenue exceeding expectations, driving an increase. Reddit (RDDT), a provider of social network platforms, saw revenue exceed expectations in the third quarter. This resulted in its first profit since going public. Optimistic forecasts for maintaining strong revenue going into the year-end shopping season were well received, leading to a significant increase.

Caterpillar (CAT), a heavy equipment manufacturer, revised its full-year revenue outlook downward, citing inventory buildup and global construction activity slowdown due to high interest rates, leading to selling pressure. Eli Lilly (LLY), a pharmaceutical company, experienced lower-than-expected sales of obesity treatment drugs. This resulted in an unexpected downward revision of its 2024 performance outlook, leading to a decline. Super Micro Computer Inc (SMCI), a server solutions company, announced the resignation of auditing firm Ernst & Young (EY) due to concerns over governance and transparency. This news triggered selling pressure and a significant decline.

Microsoft (MSFT), a software company, released its quarterly earnings after the market close. Earnings per share exceeded expectations, leading to buying interest in extended hours trading.
