According to sources, the troubled Boeing company has disbanded its global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) department, becoming the latest well-known company to adjust DEI policies, as the company's new CEO embarks on broader reforms of the employee workforce.
Insiders revealed that employees of Boeing's DEI office will be merged with another human resources team focused on talent and employee experience. On Thursday, Boeing's Vice President Sara Liang Bowen left the company, who had led this now dissolved department.
In her farewell post on social media, Bowen wrote: "This team has achieved so much - sometimes not perfect, but never easy - and dreams of doing more."
Boeing's new CEO Kelly Ortberg is streamlining the company's operations and reducing the executive team, as part of the company's 10% layoff plan. At a time when large American corporations are facing increasing pressure to cancel or soften their efforts in diversity, fairness, and inclusivity.
Although Boeing's workforce has traditionally been predominantly white and male, under the leadership of the former CEO Dave Calhoun, who stepped down in early August, the company has intensified efforts to recruit more black and other minority employees.
Activist Robby Starbuck, who opposes DEI, persuaded Toyota Motor and Harley-Davidson to reduce the scale of DEI. He stated that earlier this month he contacted Boeing's new CEO Ortberg and Board Chairman Steve Mollenkopf via email, reminding them he was considering launching an online movement against their diversity projects.
Boeing stated in a release: "Boeing remains committed to recruiting and retaining top talent, and creating an inclusive work environment where every teammate around the world can perform at their best while supporting the company's mission."
The company also stated that it prohibits discriminatory recruitment practices, and maintains "a performance-based system that is intended to promote equal opportunities, rather than equal outcomes."
Boeing's efforts in diversification have been mocked by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Earlier this year, in the development of the situation surrounding Boeing's safety issues, Musk linked the grounding of the 737 Max 9 aircraft to safety issues in Boeing's and United Airlines' diversity recruitment plans.
When retweeting a post from a user X, Musk wrote: 'Do you want to fly on a plane where they prioritize DEI recruitment over your safety?' The user pointed out that Boeing changed its recruitment policy in 2022, incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into it.
