CSC Holdings Limited (SGX:C06) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 33% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 71% in the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, there still wouldn't be many who think CSC Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Singapore's Construction industry is similar at about 0.5x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does CSC Holdings' Recent Performance Look Like?

The revenue growth achieved at CSC Holdings over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think this respectable revenue growth might not be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For CSC Holdings?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like CSC Holdings' is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 15% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 71% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 14% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we find it interesting that CSC Holdings is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On CSC Holdings' P/S

Its shares have lifted substantially and now CSC Holdings' P/S is back within range of the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that CSC Holdings currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. There could be some unobserved threats to revenue preventing the P/S ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with CSC Holdings (at least 2 which are concerning), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.

Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
