In the afternoon, the Nikkei average opened with a wider gain from the morning session at 38551.84 yen, up 498.17 yen from the previous day's close (38474.66 yen). During lunchtime, the Nikkei 225 futures traded in the range of 38500-38590 yen with strong positive momentum. The USD/JPY exchange rate remained at around 152.30-40 yen, showing a slight depreciation of the yen and strength in the dollar since around 9 a.m. Asian markets saw the Shanghai Composite Index start slightly lower but turn bullish, rising significantly by about 1.4%, while the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong reversed an early decline to rise by about 0.7% after the opening of trading.
The Tokyo market in the afternoon opened with a slightly bullish sentiment compared to the morning session. The market participants seem reassured by the resilient performance of the Nikkei average in the morning and the strong movement of Dow futures in extended hours trading. However, there is also caution ahead of key events such as the US presidential election, congressional elections, and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting results scheduled for the 7th. Some investors appear to be holding back on aggressive buying.
In terms of sectors, securities and commodity futures, nonferrous metals, and machinery are among the top gainers, while air transportation, other products, and service industries are among the top decliners.
