We Like The Quality Of Geo-Jade Petroleum's (SHSE:600759) Earnings

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 7 06:33

The market seemed underwhelmed by last week's earnings announcement from Geo-Jade Petroleum Corporation (SHSE:600759) despite the healthy numbers. We did some digging, and we think that investors are missing some encouraging factors in the underlying numbers.

SHSE:600759 Earnings and Revenue History November 6th 2024

One essential aspect of assessing earnings quality is to look at how much a company is diluting shareholders. In fact, Geo-Jade Petroleum increased the number of shares on issue by 12% over the last twelve months by issuing new shares. Therefore, each share now receives a smaller portion of profit. To talk about net income, without noticing earnings per share, is to be distracted by the big numbers while ignoring the smaller numbers that talk to per share value. How Is Dilution Impacting Geo-Jade Petroleum's Earnings Per Share (EPS)?

We don't have any data on the company's profits from three years ago. And even focusing only on the last twelve months, we don't have a meaningful growth rate because it made a loss a year ago, too. But mathematics aside, it is always good to see when a formerly unprofitable business come good (though we accept profit would have been higher if dilution had not been required). And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is influencing shareholder earnings.

In the long term, if Geo-Jade Petroleum's earnings per share can increase, then the share price should too. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Alongside that dilution, it's also important to note that Geo-Jade Petroleum's profit suffered from unusual items, which reduced profit by CN¥859m in the last twelve months. It's never great to see unusual items costing the company profits, but on the upside, things might improve sooner rather than later. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Geo-Jade Petroleum took a rather significant hit from unusual items in the year to September 2024. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit look worse than its underlying earnings power.

Our Take On Geo-Jade Petroleum's Profit Performance

To sum it all up, Geo-Jade Petroleum took a hit from unusual items which pushed its profit down; without that, it would have made more money. But on the other hand, the company issued more shares, so without buying more shares each shareholder will end up with a smaller part of the profit. Based on these factors, we think that Geo-Jade Petroleum's profits are a reasonably conservative guide to its underlying profitability. So if you'd like to dive deeper into this stock, it's crucial to consider any risks it's facing. While conducting our analysis, we found that Geo-Jade Petroleum has 2 warning signs and it would be unwise to ignore them.
