KLCI Down 10.89 Points Despite Technology Stocks Rally

Market Summary

Kuala Lumpur stock exchange's benchmark index1 today ended four consecutive days2 of uptrading momentum, shedding 10.89 points, or 0.67% to settle at 1,623.28 points, again below the 1630-point support level.

Throughout the trading day, the benchmark KLCI fluctuated between the low of 1,622.75 points and the high of 1,639.55 points, spanning 16.8 points.

At midday, Malaysian stock exchange, or Bursa Malaysia, failed to keep up with regional trend where most Asian markets rose accordingly with the US market surge following Trump's second term. Singapore Straits Index (STI) rallied 1.8%.

Bursa's key index dropped 9.26 points, or 0.57%, to 1,624.91 points at midday, closing below the 1630-point psychological threshold despite a rise in the technology sector, as indicated by the exchange's sector Technology Index which advanced 0.99 points, or 1.61%, to 62.66 points (As at 2:30pm Nov 7).

Meanwhile, the broader FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI, FBM KLCI, fell 71.58 points to 12,309.24 points.

Around midday, technology counters were among the top gainers. Semiconductor manufacturer Malaysian Pacific Industries Bhd (MPI) leaped 80 sen, or 3%, to RM27.16, while semiconductor assembly and test service outsource Inari Amertron Bhd advanced 20 sen to RM3.19, and electronic device manufacturer Vitrox added 18 sen to RM3.63.

Property and plantation hybrid Ayer Holdings Bhd added 20 sen to RM7.25 whereas Batu Kawan Bhd, a largely plantation and oleo-chemical company, climbed 18 sen to RM20.02.

Midday decliners included YTL Corporation Bhd which led the fall, shedding more than 6%, while telecom giants Maxis Bhd and CelcomDigi Bhd performed poorly.

Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd trimmed 84 sen to RM29.90, Hong Leong Financial Group Bhd gave up 34 sen to RM18.46, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd reduced by 22 sen to RM22.00

The trading volume for the half-day session reached 2.317 billion shares, with a value of RM1.688 billion. At midday, there were 359 stocks that rose, while 633 stocks declined, and 463 stocks remained unchanged. A total of 951 stocks saw no trading activity.
