After Leaping 32% TrueCar, Inc. (NASDAQ:TRUE) Shares Are Not Flying Under The Radar

TrueCar, Inc.(ナスダック:TRUE)株が32%急騰した後、電探下には飛び込んでいません

TrueCar, Inc. (NASDAQ:TRUE) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 32% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 96% in the last year.

After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking TrueCar is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 2.4x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Interactive Media and Services industry have P/S ratios below 1.3x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

What Does TrueCar's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

TrueCar could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to recover significantly, which has kept the P/S ratio from collapsing. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For TrueCar?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as TrueCar's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 8.7%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 39% overall drop in revenue. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 16% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 12% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why TrueCar is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What We Can Learn From TrueCar's P/S?

The large bounce in TrueCar's shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of TrueCar's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
