While Ameris Bancorp (NYSE:ABCB) shareholders have had a good week with the stock up 13%, insiders can't say the same having sold stock over the past year. The return on their investment would have been much higher had they held on to their stock.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Ameris Bancorp

The insider, Jon Edwards, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$355k worth of shares at a price of US$47.35 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$71.14). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 11% of Jon Edwards's holding. Jon Edwards was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Does Ameris Bancorp Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that Ameris Bancorp insiders own 5.6% of the company, worth about US$241m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
