It is a pleasure to report that the Hubei Fuxing Science and Technology Co.,Ltd (SZSE:000926) is up 40% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. After all, the share price is down 32% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.
The recent uptick of 16% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the five years over which the share price declined, Hubei Fuxing Science and TechnologyLtd's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 67% each year. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earnings. The share price decline of 8% per year isn't as bad as the EPS decline. So investors might expect EPS to bounce back -- or they may have previously foreseen the EPS decline. The high P/E ratio of 1.16k suggests that shareholders believe earnings will grow in the years ahead.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Hubei Fuxing Science and TechnologyLtd, it has a TSR of -30% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 8.1% in the last year, Hubei Fuxing Science and TechnologyLtd shareholders lost 3.8% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 5% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that Hubei Fuxing Science and TechnologyLtd is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those doesn't sit too well with us...
