Buyers continued to expect deregulation and growth-focused policies under the upcoming Trump administration, leading to an increase after the opening. However, with the bond market closed due to Veterans Day holiday, causing limited market drivers, small-cap stocks were bought through rotation while high-tech stocks were sold off, resulting in a temporary decline in the Nasdaq. The Dow maintained strength throughout the day, setting new all-time highs for multiple consecutive days, providing overall market support as the Nasdaq also recovered into positive territory by the end of the session. By sector, automotive and auto parts, as well as property service and development, saw increases, while semiconductors and manufacturing equipment experienced declines.
Yoga apparel retailer Lululemon (LULU) reported stronger-than-expected sales in China, leading to an increase. Health insurance company Cigna (CI) confirmed its intention not to pursue a merger with its competitor Humana, with a plan prioritizing capital allocation being well received, resulting in an increase. Coinbase Global Inc Class A (COIN), which provides a trading platform for cryptocurrency assets, saw an increase in sales expectations following former President Trump's support for the crypto market, leading to a record high for Bitcoin and driving buying interest.
Software maker Adobe (ADBE) and online payment company Block Inc (SQ) both saw gains after investment upgrades by analysts. AbbVie (ABBV), a biopharmaceutical company, experienced a decrease after two mid-stage clinical trials for a schizophrenia treatment being developed by its acquired company, Celgene, failed to meet their primary objectives. In contrast, Bristol Myers Squibb (BMY), a competitor pharmaceutical firm, saw an increase as concerns about intensified competition eased after the FDA had already approved a competing drug developed by the company in September.
Live Nation Entertainment Inc (LYV), an event company, announced its third-quarter earnings after the market closed, exceeding profit expectations per share and seeing an increase in extended hours trading.
