Later, with Veterans Day holiday causing bond markets to be closed, creating a lack of material, rotation led to buying of small-cap stocks while high-tech stocks were sold, causing a temporary decline in the Nasdaq. The Dow remained strong throughout the day, setting new record highs for consecutive days, supporting the overall market and enabling the Nasdaq to recover into positive territory by the close.
Following the strong performance of the U.S. stocks, the Tokyo market started trading with a slight buying bias. The Nikkei average started slightly higher, rising to 39,866.72 yen at one point, but faced heavy resistance due to weakness in semiconductor stocks. Around noon, news of Marco Rubio, a China hawk, assuming a key position in the upcoming Trump administration led to a decline in the Nikkei average in the afternoon. Although the market narrowed losses towards the close, caution towards the incoming Trump administration remained a focus in the market.
The Nikkei average at the close was 39,376.09 yen, down 157.23 yen (-0.40%) from the previous day. The trading volume on the Tokyo Prime Market was 2.4 billion 60.06 million shares. Trading value was 5 trillion 15.8 billion yen. Among the global sectors, electric appliances, petroleum/coal, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and chemicals declined, while transportation equipment, rubbers, construction, services, and mining increased. The number of rising stocks on the Tokyo Prime Market was 48%, while the number of declining stocks was 47%.
The top contributor to the decline was Advantest <6857>, which pushed the Nikkei average down by about 81 yen with one stock. The second place was Toho Electric <8035>, followed by SoftBank Group <9984>, Laser Tech <6920>, Terumo <4543>, Trend <4704>, Chugai Pharmaceutical <4519>, etc.
On the other hand, the top contributor to the rise was Recruit Holdings <6098>, which pushed the Nikkei average up by about 36 yen with one stock. The second place was First Retailing <9983>, followed by TDK <6762>, KDDI <9433>, Toyota <7203>, Shimizu Construction <1803>, Renesas <6723>, etc.
