British luxury auto manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover announced on Monday that its Jaguar brand will temporarily stop selling any new cars in the United Kingdom.

This legendary British brand will hibernate until 2026, when it will reappear, only selling high-end electric vehicles. Until then, Jaguar Land Rover will not be shipping any new Jaguars to United Kingdom dealers. A company spokesperson said all remaining Jaguars in inventory are now classified as used cars, regardless of mileage.

Jaguar Land Rover set a plan in early 2021 for Jaguar to move towards pure electric direction, while a few months before, then British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced plans to gradually stop selling new petrol or diesel cars before 2020. The reality has proven that this transition is much more complicated than anticipated, both for the company and the country.

Earlier this year, Jaguar ceased production of XE sedans, XF sedans, and F-Type coupes in the United Kingdom. The brand's assembly of the E-Pace and I-Pace sports utility vehicles in Austria will halt starting from December, with the remaining output being sold to markets outside the United Kingdom. This means that for the first time since World War II, Britons will not have any new Jaguars.

While Jaguar Land Rover does not disclose revenue by brand, Land Rover has long been the group's main profit driver. Management decided Jaguar needed a complete overhaul, with the new luxury electric vehicle range expected to be launched no earlier than the summer of 2026, later than the initial plan.

Jaguar Land Rover CEO Adrian Mardell stated last week that seeing competitors launch electric vehicles that are not well-received by consumers, Jaguar Land Rover decided to take more time to introduce suitable products.

Mardell told reporters during the November 8 earnings call, "To be successful in any market, especially in the new market of electric vehicles, you really can't make any compromises on the cars you bring to the market."

Mardell mentioned that until the first quarter of 2026, Jaguar Land Rover will still produce F-Pace SUVs for export in the United Kingdom, slightly later than the previous plan. He warned that the company will control investment in pure electric brands.

He said, "Our investment in Jaguar now and in the future will be proportional to the scale, scope, and opportunities we currently see in the business. The investment in Jaguar will be less than 10 years ago."
