HBT Financial, Inc. (NASDAQ:HBT) shareholders may have reason to be concerned, as several insiders sold their shares over the past year. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At HBT Financial

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Director, Patrick Busch, sold US$278k worth of shares at a price of US$24.09 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$24.77). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 4.6% of Patrick Busch's holding.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 18.17k shares worth US$344k. But they sold 21.56k shares for US$502k. Over the last year we saw more insider selling of HBT Financial shares, than buying. Does HBT Financial Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. HBT Financial insiders own about US$451m worth of shares (which is 60% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At HBT Financial Tell Us?

An insider hasn't bought HBT Financial stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. Despite some insider buying, the longer term picture doesn't make us feel much more positive. On the plus side, HBT Financial makes money, and is growing profits. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
