On November 12, 2024, the 20th China Institute in America (China Institute in America) High-Level Summit was held in New York.
David Firestein (David Firestein), president of the Bush US-China Relations Foundation, said during the summit dialogue that the current Sino-US relationship is facing unprecedented changes, and the tariff policy has become an important point in the relationship between the two sides.
Fang Dawei believes that tariffs are bad for the US, do not solve trade problems, and will increase inflation. “In my opinion, tariffs are not an act for economic or commercial purposes, but a political act. They are not a means, but an end in itself. It's more of a performative political gesture. The tariffs that began to be implemented in 2018 have had no substantial impact on China, so I don't think the future will be different. The goal of the tariffs is to create a tough image of the candidates and their teams against China in order to gain voter support.”
Fang Dawei also said that there are areas where China and the US can cooperate, such as climate change, pandemics, cancer treatment, etc. “Although we will not reach agreement on some issues, we cannot make progress without Sino-US cooperation on these global issues.”
As the dust settles on the US election, Chinese people in the US are also worried that hate crimes against Asians may return. In response, Fang Dawei said, “I have long publicly expressed opposition to this kind of hostile statement against Asians because it is extremely irresponsible and shameful, and it brings shame to America. We must be clear that this neo-McCarthyism and racial prejudice is unacceptable today.”
Fang Dawei said that the future of Sino-US relations is uncertain, and there are opportunities and risks. Although the two countries have differences in the fields of economy, politics, and security, there is still huge room for cooperation in dealing with global challenges. He called on the new US administration to adopt a pragmatic attitude and stabilize bilateral relations in order to promote global peace and prosperity.
FANG DAWEI (David J. Firestein) is the CEO and president of the George Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations, and a founding and current member of the Foundation's board of directors. Prior to this position, he was the director of the Center for Chinese Public Policy at the University of Texas at Austin, and was also Linden? Baines? Professor at the Johnson School of Public Affairs and former senior vice president of the American East-West Institute. From 1992 to 2010, he mainly focused on studying Sino-US relations and working as a US diplomat.
