It's Down 29% But OptiNose, Inc. (NASDAQ:OPTN) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

オプティノーズ社(ナスダック:OPTN)は29%下落していますが、見た目よりもリスクが高い可能性があります

To the annoyance of some shareholders, OptiNose, Inc. (NASDAQ:OPTN) shares are down a considerable 29% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 59% share price decline.

Since its price has dipped substantially, OptiNose may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Pharmaceuticals industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.7x and even P/S higher than 15x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does OptiNose's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

OptiNose could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think OptiNose's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like OptiNose's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 5.1% gain to the company's revenues. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 10% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 39% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 20% per year growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's peculiar that OptiNose's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

OptiNose's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

OptiNose's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
