Microsoft Corp.'s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Blizzard Entertainment has dropped a significant hint regarding an upcoming project that could redefine the future of the StarCraft franchise.

According to IGN, a job listing posted on Nov. 13 reveals Blizzard is seeking an "associate design director, innovation," for an "upcoming open-world shooter game," and all signs point to this being the long-anticipated StarCraft FPS.

The job ad promises that the chosen candidate will "be the vision holder and owner of key strategic innovations" for the project, with focus on both indie and AAA developments.

Blizzard is looking for a candidate who is not only capable of overseeing innovative game mechanics but also someone who can transform "dreams into reality that players can get their hands on and enjoy."

A StarCraft FPS In Development?

The job listing comes on the heels of reports earlier this year that Blizzard was actively working on a StarCraft first-person shooter.

These reports traced back to a September revelation by Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier during an appearance on IGN's Podcast Unlocked. Schreier, who is no stranger to inside knowledge at Blizzard, shared that the company was attempting a third shot at creating a StarCraft shooter, with former Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay leading the charge.

"I have heard that they are working on a StarCraft shooter," Schreier said at the time. "StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard."

However, the journalist also noted that Blizzard's history with StarCraft shooters has been anything but smooth. This has been a long-running saga, marked by the company's failed attempts to expand the franchise beyond its real-time strategy roots.
