Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In AppLovin

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 17 07:28

Some AppLovin Corporation (NASDAQ:APP) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Chief Marketing Officer, Kihorany Jansen, recently sold a substantial US$34m worth of stock at a price of US$286 per share. That sale reduced their total holding by 12% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

AppLovin Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent sale by Kihorany Jansen is the biggest insider sale of AppLovin shares that we've seen in the last year. That means that even when the share price was slightly below the current price of US$291, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 12% of Kihorany Jansen's holding.

In the last year AppLovin insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Does AppLovin Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that AppLovin insiders own 36% of the company, worth about US$35b. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
