I would like to inform you that Meito Transportation Co., Ltd., which is the main operating company of C&F Logistics Holdings Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “C&F Logi”), which is responsible for the low temperature logistics business, has now introduced the company's first refrigerated refrigerated EV (electric vehicle) truck and has begun operation.

C&F Logistics recognizes changes due to climate change as an important management issue, and in order to realize a sustainable logistics business, it agrees with the TCFD recommendations and aims to reduce CO₂ emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 38% by 2030 compared to fiscal 2021, and aim for carbon neutral by 2050.
In the transportation industry, the composition ratio of CO₂ emissions in all industries is 18.5%, which is the second largest ※1, and freight cars and trucks emit 38.0% of it, and we are working on measures that can be implemented, such as fuel-saving activities and the introduction of fuel-efficient vehicles. However, BEVs (battery electric vehicles), which have zero emissions, have a short cruising range and are not suitable for long-distance transportation, and since FCVs (fuel cell vehicles) have a limited number of hydrogen stations, they have not yet reached full-scale introduction in the logistics industry. In particular, in the food cold chain handled by Meito Transportation, the inside of the cargo hold is always kept at a low temperature with refrigeration equipment to ensure food safety and security, so more energy is required.
In analyzing risks and opportunities related to climate change, C&F Logi believes that determining future technology in the cold chain by testing and introducing next-generation technology and improving knowledge through collaboration with external parties will lead to the realization of sustainable low-temperature logistics, and has now introduced Meito Transport's first BEV, and has begun business operations aimed at future carbon neutral.
The introduced vehicle is one “ELF-EV” from Isuzu Motors Co., Ltd., and comprehensive support is expected from proposals for introduction to verification of effects after introduction. According to the plan, it is estimated that annual CO2 emissions can be reduced by 21% *2 compared to diesel trucks of the same level with 65 km of operation per day. Since the contracted electricity at the Meito Transportation Nishitokyo Distribution Center to be deployed is not derived from renewable energy, there will be no total reduction, but further reduction effects will be obtained by reviewing power plans and introducing solar power generation facilities in the future.
Furthermore, in addition to dealing with environmental issues, in the logistics industry, upper limit restrictions on overtime work for drivers are applied by laws related to work style reform, and as a result, there is a risk that transportation capacity is insufficient and luggage cannot be carried, and responses are also required.
This time, we have adopted TOPRE CO., LTD., for BEV truck containers and refrigeration equipment. In particular, the refrigeration device is equipped with an in-cabinet drying mode, which is the company's patented technology. Every time luggage is put in and out of refrigerated trucks, moist outside air flows in, condensation occurs inside the cabinet, and if left as is, the cardboard box of the luggage will get wet, and there is a risk that quality will deteriorate. Therefore, drivers are limited in time by cleaning the inside of the cabinet and drying it over several hours. The drying mode manufactured by Topre Co., Ltd. can perform dehumidification and drying in as little as 60 minutes, thereby reducing driver restraint time and making it possible to transport drivers at room temperature on the return trip.
The BEV trucks introduced this time are mainly operated in delivery operations for the retail industry, and by collecting and analyzing various data such as driving and charging, we will measure the practicality of BEVs in the cold chain and their effects towards carbon neutrality, and aim to realize sustainable low-temperature logistics.
