Over the past year, many Kimberly-Clark Corporation (NYSE:KMB) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Kimberly-Clark

The Chief Business & Transformation Officer, Jeffrey Melucci, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.9m worth of shares at a price of US$136 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$134. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Over the last year we saw more insider selling of Kimberly-Clark shares, than buying. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Does Kimberly-Clark Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Kimberly-Clark insiders own 0.2% of the company, worth about US$68m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Do The Kimberly-Clark Insider Transactions Indicate?

The fact that there have been no Kimberly-Clark insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Kimberly-Clark insiders. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
