GoodRx Helps has selected five winners from 745 applicants in 46 states for the 2024 Students for Healthcare Equity Scholarship
SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GoodRx Helps, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization seeking to address health inequities across the country, has selected its 2024 Students for Healthcare Equity Scholarship recipients. The scholarship program was created to encourage culturally responsive healthcare by providing financial assistance to healthcare students from underrepresented groups. To date, GoodRx Helps has granted $325,000 in scholarships to students advocating for equitable access to healthcare in their schools, communities, and beyond.
Healthcare professionals who reflect the increasingly diverse U.S. population are essential to fostering culturally appropriate care, reducing health disparities, and improving the health and well-being of systemically underserved communities. According to the National Library of Medicine, less than 1% and about 7% of U.S. healthcare workers identify as Hispanic and Black/African American, respectively, even though the two racial groups make up approximately 20% and 14% of the U.S. population, respectively.
A judging panel of experienced healthcare professionals selected five winners from 745 applicants in 46 states. Each recipient received a $5,000 scholarship award, renewable for up to three years for a potential total award amount of $20,000 over four years. Applicants were evaluated based on their ideas for improving healthcare equity and access in the current health landscape.
GoodRx Helps recognizes that providing patients with comprehensive and cohesive care requires a multidisciplinary team. This year, the scholarship program's eligibility requirements were expanded from medical, pharmacy, and nursing students to any student working toward a healthcare or allied healthcare career.
"We are honored to support these exceptional students who have proven to be leaders in their communities, supporting and representing marginalized groups through equitable healthcare programs and practices," said Elizabeth Davis, GoodRx Helps President. "We can't wait to see how they continue to lead by example at their academic and professional institutions."
