Manufacturing Industry Achieves 82.4% Capacity Utilisation In Q3 2024

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) reported an 82.4% capacity utilisation rate for the manufacturing industry in third quarter (Q3) 2024, marking a 3% increase from Q3 2023's 79.4%. Chief Statistician, Datuk Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin, highlighted this growth during the release of the Manufacturing Industry Capacity Utilisation Statistics.

"The capacity utilisation of the Manufacturing industry in the third quarter of 2024 was 82.4%, increased by 3.0 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the preceding year (Q3 2023: 79.4%)," he stated.

Key Highlights:

  • Highest-performing sub-sectors:
    • Transport equipment and other manufacturers: 84.1%
    • Non-metallic mineral products, basic metal, and fabricated metal products: 83.6%
    • Textiles, wearing apparel, leather, and footwear: 83.0%
  • Export-oriented industries: Capacity utilisation rose by 3.4 percentage points to 81.8%, driven by:
    • Manufacture of computer, electronics, and optical products: 81.3% (+2.3 percentage points)
    • Manufacture of chemical and chemical products: 84.4% (+2.2 percentage points)
  • Domestic-oriented industries: Capacity utilisation increased by 2.1 percentage points to 83.8%, supported by:
    • Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery & equipment: 84.4%
    • Manufacture of processed food products: 84.9%

Seven states surpassed the national rate, with WP Labuan leading at 96.7%, followed by Terengganu (85.8%) and Negeri Sembilan (85.7%). Perlis recorded the lowest capacity utilisation rate at 67.5%.
