Statistically speaking, long term investing is a profitable endeavour. But that doesn't mean long term investors can avoid big losses. For example, after five long years the Healthcare Services Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:HCSG) share price is a whole 56% lower. That's an unpleasant experience for long term holders. And the share price decline continued over the last week, dropping some 6.8%.

After losing 6.8% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Looking back five years, both Healthcare Services Group's share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 7.7% per year. This reduction in EPS is less than the 15% annual reduction in the share price. This implies that the market was previously too optimistic about the stock.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered Healthcare Services Group's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Healthcare Services Group's TSR of was a loss of 50% for the 5 years. That wasn't as bad as its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

Healthcare Services Group provided a TSR of 14% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 8% per year, over five years. It could well be that the business is stabilizing.
