Marriott International: China's domestic tourism is recovering
On November 12, the State Council issued a decision to amend the “National New Year and Anniversary Holiday Measures”, including adjustments and revisions such as extending the Spring Festival and May Day holidays by one day, and generally not more than 6 days of continuous work before and after statutory holidays.
In fact, the tourism industry has recovered rapidly since the pandemic and is still in a rapid growth channel in 2024. The number of tourists on statutory holidays has basically exceeded pre-pandemic levels, and participants have also received positive performance feedback due to industry development.
Marriott International CEO Anthony Capuano said the company has laid off more than 800 employees, and business operations and growth are still steady. The number of hotel contracts signed in China in the first half of this year reached a record high, showing that both public and private real estate agents in China are betting on the long-term development of the travel and tourism industry. He added that China's domestic tourism is gradually recovering, and the performance of inbound tourism in the third quarter has surpassed pre-pandemic levels. Before the pandemic, about 18% to 19% of the Group's total number of room nights came from cross-border travel, which had risen to more than 20% by the third quarter. With the recovery of air capacity in Greater China, this number is expected to rise. As a result, the Group believes there will be a greater increase in inbound tourism.
The development prospects of the OTA platform are optimistic. At the beginning of 2024, the China Institute of Tourism Research expects the number of domestic tourists to exceed 6 billion in 2024, an increase of 22.7% over the previous year. The total number of inbound and outbound tourists is expected to exceed 0.26 billion. According to the data for the first three quarters, the annual travel data may exceed expectations.
The number of tourists is expected to maintain a double-digit growth channel in 2025, and the tourism industry chain is also benefiting from the high growth brought about by travel consumption.
Dongwu Securities released a research report saying that based on the high willingness of residents to travel and the intensive introduction of policies to promote the continuous improvement of the cultural tourism industry, OTA platforms will continue to benefit from the high increase in inbound and outbound travel and the prosperity of the basic domestic travel market. A stable pattern will help keep the OTA platform's monetization rate stable.
