Challenging Google's dominant position? OpenAI targets the search engine market and plans to launch a new type of browser.

Google is facing a back-and-forth attack

At a time when Google, the global search engine hegemon, is mired in an anti-monopoly vortex, OpenAI plans to “take advantage of it.”

According to rumors, OpenAI plans to launch its own new browser and integrate it with the ChatGPT chat tool to provide a more efficient search experience.

OpenAI may be considering a partnership with Samsung. Previously, it had already teamed up with Apple, which also gave it an opportunity to challenge Google.

US stocks closed on Thursday, and Google's parent company Alphabet closed down nearly 5%, hitting a new low since November. The total market value evaporated by about 102.2 billion US dollars (about RMB 739.6 billion) overnight.

Is the OpenAI browser in the works?

According to Information, OpenAI, which is supported by Microsoft, is considering creating a new web browser combined with its ChatGPT.

According to the report, OpenAI has discussed this search product with website and application developers such as Condé Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite, and Priceline.

OpenAI is also considering applying its artificial intelligence capabilities to devices manufactured by Google's business partner Samsung.

Currently, Google's Android system supports Samsung phones, and Google's Gemini AI recently provided features on Samsung devices, such as text summaries of voice recordings and image editing technology.

Earlier this year, OpenAI and Apple reached a similar agreement, and the “Apple Intelligence” function now uses OpenAI technology.

If it joins forces with the two major mobile phone giants, this move may also mean that OpenAI will compete with Google, which has the largest share of the search engine market.

However, it's unclear when OpenAI will launch a browser, or even whether.

But the big startup did hire two employees who were involved in the development of Google Chrome.

Among them, a few months ago, OpenAI hired Ben Goodger, one of the founding team members of Google Chrome.

Needless to say, if the OpenAI version of the browser comes out, then OpenAI will not only compete with Google on the big model, but will also start challenging Chrome in terms of browsers.

Challenge Google

Right now, Google's dominance in the browser market is in jeopardy.

The US Department of Justice is trying to force Google to divest its Chrome browser because the tech giant illegally monopolizes the online search market.

On Wednesday EST, the US Department of Justice, several state governments and other plaintiffs submitted a document to a federal court in the capital Washington to compel Google to sell the Chrome browser and Android operating system and restrict training of its AI models.

In response, Google strongly opposed these measures, calling the proposal “too aggressive.” Google also warned that this could have a “disastrous” impact on AI R&D investment.

You know, Chrome is the most widely used browser in the world, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the US browser market.

For the past 20 years, Android and Chrome have been critical to Google's success.

It is said that ads next to search results last year accounted for 57% of Google's parent company's $307 billion revenue.

But now, the tech giant is facing a back-and-forth attack. Before, there was anti-monopoly suppression; later, tech rookies caught up.

Since ChatGPT set off the AI wave at the end of 2022, Google owner Alphabet has been working hard to improve its artificial intelligence capabilities.

Last year, Google launched its own generative artificial intelligence chatbot Gemini to counter OpenAI, which Microsoft supports behind it.

Now, OpenAI is targeting the search and browser markets again.

Earlier, OpenAI announced that it will enter the search market through SearchGPT.

According to reports, OpenAI has cooperated with a number of news organizations. The engine can provide users with real-time sports scores, stock quotes, news, weather, etc.

This week, OpenAI also introduced ChatGPT's advanced voice mode, adding support for web browsers. Previously, the feature was only available on desktop and mobile apps.

Kevin Weil, chief product officer at OpenAI, tweeted: “Now you can talk to ChatGPT directly from your browser.”

Currently, only paid users with Plus, Enterprise, Teams, or Edu accounts can access the web. It will be open to free users in the next few weeks.
