The UK antitrust regulator said in an interim decision that Apple and Google will face formal investigations due to their dominant position in the mobile browser sector.
The Zhitong Finance App learned that the British antitrust regulator stated in an interim decision that Apple (AAPL.US) and Google (GOOGL.US) will face formal investigation due to their dominant position in the mobile browser field. The decision was aimed at curbing tech giants' monopoly on mobile operating systems.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said in an interim survey that the mobile browser market is not working well for UK businesses and millions of mobile phone users. The agency suggests prioritizing the investigation of Apple and Google's mobile ecosystem activities in accordance with the new digital market competition regulations that will come into effect next year.
Research by the CMA independent investigation team found that Apple and Google have formed an actual “duopoly” in the mobile ecosystem, including operating systems, app stores, and web browsers on mobile devices. The team believes that Apple's policies hinder innovation in mobile browsers. The CMA said it will invite the public to comment on the above provisional findings before December 13, local time, and it is expected that a final decision will be made in March next year.
