The U.S. stock market extended its gains. In the New York foreign exchange market on the 22nd, the dollar-yen declined to 154.20 yen, then rose to 155.02 yen, closing at 154.84 yen. After the dominance of dollar selling due to the decline in U.S. long-term interest rates, the dollar shifted to buying as the preliminary value of the U.S. service industry PMI for November was unexpectedly revised upward. Although the final value of the November University of Michigan Consumer Confidence Index was unexpectedly revised downward, leading to a retreat in dollar buying, the long-term expected inflation rate in the same index unexpectedly rose, keeping a solid movement. The Euro-dollar fell from 1.0435 dollars to 1.0392 dollars, then closed at 1.0415 dollars. Germany's preliminary value for the November service industry PMI unexpectedly fell into contraction territory for the first time since February, along with the unexpectedly worst results for the Eurozone's preliminary value for the November service industry PMI, which led to continued euro selling priced in with a substantial interest rate cut by the European Central Bank (ECB).
On the 22nd, NY crude oil futures for January continued to rise (NYMEX crude oil January futures closing price: 71.24, up 1.14).
