With EPS Growth And More, Select Water Solutions (NYSE:WTTR) Makes An Interesting Case

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 23 20:30

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Select Water Solutions (NYSE:WTTR). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Select Water Solutions' Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Select Water Solutions has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. In previous twelve months, Select Water Solutions' EPS has risen from US$0.53 to US$0.58. That's a modest gain of 8.6%.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Select Water Solutions' EBIT margins are flat but, worryingly, its revenue is actually down. This does not bode too well for short term growth prospects and so understanding the reasons for these results is of great importance.

Are Select Water Solutions Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own Select Water Solutions shares worth a considerable sum. Holding US$72m worth of stock in the company is no laughing matter and insiders will be committed in delivering the best outcomes for shareholders. This would indicate that the goals of shareholders and management are one and the same.

While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Select Water Solutions, with market caps between US$1.0b and US$3.2b, is around US$5.4m.

The Select Water Solutions CEO received US$4.4m in compensation for the year ending December 2023. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Is Select Water Solutions Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One important encouraging feature of Select Water Solutions is that it is growing profits. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for Select Water Solutions, but the pleasant picture gets better than that. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching. It is worth noting though that we have found 1 warning sign for Select Water Solutions that you need to take into consideration.
