Red Violet, Inc. (NASDAQ:RDVT) insiders who bought shares over the past year were rewarded handsomely last week. The stock rose 13%, resulting in a US$61m rise in the company's market capitalisation, translating to a gain of 107% on their initial investment. As a result, the stock they originally bought for US$90.2k is now worth US$186.7k.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Red Violet

Red Violet

The Independent Director William Livek made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$90k worth of shares at a price of US$18.40 each. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$38.11), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

William Livek purchased 4.90k shares over the year. The average price per share was US$18.40. Does Red Violet Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Red Violet insiders own about US$89m worth of shares. That equates to 17% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Red Violet Tell Us?

Red Violet

The fact that there have been no Red Violet insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. However, our analysis of transactions over the last year is heartening. Overall we don't see anything to make us think Red Violet insiders are doubting the company, and they do own shares. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. For example - Red Violet has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
