InMode's (NASDAQ:INMD) Earnings Have Declined Over Three Years, Contributing to Shareholders 77% Loss
While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the InMode Ltd. (NASDAQ:INMD) share price has gained 22% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been stomach churning. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 77% in the last three years. So it's about time shareholders saw some gains. The thing to think about is whether the business has really turned around.
On a more encouraging note the company has added US$95m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the three-year loss for shareholders.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the three years that the share price fell, InMode's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 0.9% each year. The share price decline of 38% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past. The less favorable sentiment is reflected in its current P/E ratio of 10.47.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 34% in the last year, InMode shareholders lost 16%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 4% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. Before forming an opinion on InMode you might want to consider these 3 valuation metrics.
