It is usually uneventful when a single insider buys stock. However, When quite a few insiders buy shares, as it happened in Shutterstock, Inc.'s (NYSE:SSTK) case, it's fantastic news for shareholders.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Shutterstock

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when CEO & Director Paul Hennessy bought US$480k worth of shares at a price of US$38.59 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$30.98. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

Insider Ownership Of Shutterstock

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Shutterstock insiders own 32% of the company, worth about US$346m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
